Attorney and public policy advocate Maya Harris surprised everyone by showing up unexpectedly to the Democratic National Convention (DNC) to support her older sister Kamala Harris’s run for president in 2024.
Maya began by talking about the principles that their late mother, Dr. Shyamala Gopalan Harris, an Indian, had instilled in them.

Kamala Harris says she ‘miss her’ mother everyday as Maya reflects on mom’s journey
Not only did Kamala pay honor to Maya, but she also mentioned her mother, claiming to have been 19 years old when she traveled alone over the seven seas to reach California from India. She came to the US “with an unshakable dream to be the scientist who would cure breast cancer,” according to the US Vice President.
“I know she’s smiling and looking down, and I miss her every day, especially right now,” the Democrat remarked.
“As luck would have it, she met my father, Donald Harris, a Jamaican student, before returning home to a typical arranged marriage after graduation. My sister, Maya, and I were formed by their act of self-determination when they fell in love and were married, she said.
Maya recalled how their mother encouraged them to be “the authors of our own stories” by moving to the US from India in quest of a better life.
“That’s a uniquely American story—Mommy’s journey and the opportunity she wanted for Kamala and me,” the woman said.
She continued by saying that if their late mother had been there at DNC, she would have shown her pride in Kamala. Then, “She’d remark, ‘That’s enough,’ without skipping a beat. You have tasks to complete.
Maya asserted that Kamala knows what it’s like to be the underdog in the US, just like a lot of other Americans. She made the following comment, mocking Donald Trump: “Where others wish to take us back to the past. Hold on, my sister replies, we’re not going back.
“Kamala understands what it’s like to be disregarded and undervalued. She is aware of what it’s like to be the underdog and has overcome all odds to produce a great deal of excitement, hope, and joy across the country. And for that reason, Maya said, “we need her leadership at this momentous time.
