In Haryana’s Charkhi Dadri, a “Sarv Khap Mahapanchayat” demanded “justice” for Phogat, who had been disqualified before to the wrestling final at the Olympics in Paris.
On Sunday, a Khap leader from Haryana requested that a sitting Supreme Court judge look into allegations of “conspiracy” against the state’s former wrestler Vinesh Phogat. Phogat retired from the sport after being disqualified for being overweight prior to her gold medal match at the most recent Olympic Games in Paris.
The Sangwan Khap’s leader, Sombir Sangwan, made the remark following a number of Khaps’ “Sarv Khap Mahapanchayat” at Charkhi Dadri, Haryana, calling for “justice” for Phogat and urging her to reconsider her retirement choice.
“A sitting Supreme Court judge need to look at the entire affair; she deserves justice. We also need to know why she suddenly gained so much weight. After the episode, Sangwan told reporters, “It was the responsibility of the several people who were with her to make sure her weight didn’t increase.”
Phogat, 29, participated in the 50 kg division at the Games in Paris, barely making the final weight cut by 100 grams. She was so instantly demoted to the last position in accordance with the sport’s regulations, making her ineligible for even a bronze medal. She would have been the first Indian female wrestler to ever win an Olympic gold or silver medal.
Phogat subsequently appealed the ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and requested a co-silver. August 13 is the date the verdict will be announced.
The Khap chief Sangwan, meantime, demanded that the recently retired grappler get the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna.
He went on, “She ought to have access to the same facilities as an Olympic gold medal winner.”
According to Nayab Singh Saini, the chief minister of Haryana, Phogat would be honored “like a sliver mdeallist.”
