There is no competition at all for Sabrina Carpenter, who has emerged as the new it girl for all the (kind of) heartbroken criminals. Just look at her sixth album, Short n’ Sweet.
We had just finished seeing the opulent, silly, yet somehow realistic music video for “Please Please Please,” which unofficially solidified Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan’s reputation as the it couple (albeit they are currently “on and off”).
We may now lose ourselves in the entire Short n’ Sweet CD. Furthermore, be aware that the internet has already surpassed you in terms of playing the game. Their judgment? Everyone is inconsolable, and for perfectly good reasons.

Short n’ Sweet is situationship central
In 36 minutes, “Short n’ Sweet” combines pop and country music with a hint of R&B, taking listeners around the globe on a voyage as they attempt to make sense of their wild love lives.

With 11 tracks, Sabrina covers nearly every topic in a melodic way. You’ll undoubtedly find something to obsess over, whether it’s passion without love, exes coming back, commitment without responsibility, or your nightly self-gaslighting sessions. In fact, Short n’ Sweet was called a “no skip album” on the internet just a few hours after its debut, which is quite the honor.
Barry Keoghan marks his presence in spirit
“Who’s the cute boy with the white jacket and thick accent?” Not even a pop historian can fail to notice that Sabrina swoons in the highlight single Bed Chem, which is obviously a reference to Barry Keoghan, the former boyfriend.

When it comes to their favorite new pop singer, Barry, the internet is keeping him on thin ice, and Sabrina isn’t going to let her main crush to disgrace her, as the music video for Please Please Please has shown.

Bonus crash course in pop: The Chappell Roan edition
It’s possible that Sabrina nodded subtly to her pop best friend Chappell Roan. With their newly acquired astronomical notoriety, the two are complementing one another, and cooperation is preferable to rivalry in this case. The song “Casual” from Chappell Roan’s debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess (2023) has its own fan base.
The lyrics “Guess I’ll waste another year on wonderin’ if / If that was casual, then I’m an idiot” from Sabrina’s Short n’ Sweet song “Sharpest Tool” are sometimes interpreted as a reference to Chappell’s “Casual,” which also explicitly addresses the same issue.
Something for everyone
Espresso and Please Please Please have always been in charge. The remaining nine tunes now get their chance to shine. Let’s not forget Sharpest Tool, who calls out patterns like always having their phone face down and silence being a strategy in situationships, with lines like “We were goin’ right, then you took a left / Left me with a lot of shit to second-guess / Guess I’ll waste another year on wonderin’ if / If that was casual, then I’m an idiot / I’m lookin’ for an answer in-between the lines” that cut to the core.
Moreover, Coincidence has sharp, retaliatory sentences that will leave you speechless. One example might be the line, “What a surprise, your car drove itself from L.A. / Your phone just died.”

Dumb & Poetic will resonate with everyone who has ever been completely done with the pursuit of love. As she sings, “Just because you act like one doesn’t make you a man / Don’t think you understand / Just because you leave like one doesn’t make you a man,” Sabrina is right there with you.
Conversely, Slim Pickins will stand by you in your hopelessness when you realize, for the millionth time, how unfair the dating world is and how it virtually works against you. Sabrina exclaims, “Since the good ones are deceased or taken / I’ll just keep on moanin’ and bitchin'” .

A particular mention should go to Juno, who seems like a more grown-up version of Sabrina’s 2022 hit song. Silence. However, Lie to Girls takes center stage here since it exposes all the ardent romantic girlies who often overlook inappropriate behavior. does the phrase “You don’t have to lie to girls / If they like you, they’ll just lie to themselves” make sense?

Last song Probably for the best, Don’t Smile isn’t the kind of bubble you want to conclude your small listening session with. “My heart is heavy now, it’s like a hundred pounds” is a place we’ve all visited and most likely will return to. You might as well start belting out a new song.
