Robert Downey Jr is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the supervillain Doctor Doom.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Robert Downey Jr. will make a comeback as the villainous Doctor Doom, rather than Iron Man. Fans are experiencing mixed emotions following the unexpected revelation.
MCU President Kevin Feige announced his casting on Saturday at Comic-Con in San Diego. Additionally, he said that the Russo Brothers, the directors of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, will be returning. They are returning to helm two more Avengers sequels: Doomsday, which will include Robert’s Doom and Secret Wars.
Casting sparks backlash
Robert is portraying the recently added character Victor Von Doom in the MCU. In Avengers: Endgame, his character Iron Man met his demise. Social media users have expressed confusion in response to the revelation; some have pointed to Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine’s Return to the Universe as another example.
“These two scenes have no meaning anymore,” a user on the defunct Twitter platform, X, commented. One commenter responded to the post by saying, “No, it’s not. Victor von Doom and Tony Stark are two very distinct people. The Wolverine we now possess is not the same as Logan’s. That’s merely a variant,” said a second person. “Well, that pair of characters is deceased. We now have options. Moreover, welcome to the comic book universe.

A social media user expressed, “I understand that it’s a multiverse and all that, but Iron Man’s role as Doctor Doom has no bearing on the MCU in the current sense and does not advance the character in any way. It’s only for ticket sales. It doesn’t make sense, is monotonous, and is disrespectful to my favorite. Afterwards. Another commented, “I just feel like this and some people are trying to say the Robert Downey Doctor Doom casting is so stupid, it’s brilliant.”
One person said, “That is the weirdest thing ever,” while another said, “I don’t even know how the MCU has completely reduced itself to cash grabs and nostalgia with no sense of creativity has to be studied.”
About his return to MCU
In one or more of the next Avengers films, Robert will portray the antagonist Victor Von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom. He played Iron Man, the beloved character that launched Marvel’s cinematic achievements, in nine different films. However, on Saturday, he made an appearance donning Dr. Doom’s mask and green cloak. “New mask, same task,” Downey said, drawing wild applause.
He made his comeback following his Oscar victory for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s 2023 film Oppenheimer. In 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, when Tony sacrificed his life to save the universe, he bid farewell to the Tony Stark persona that had served as the MCU’s main character for more than ten years.
