Chicago: Democrats prioritize Americans, Donald Trump prioritizes himself. While Trump feels that the United States has passed its prime, Kamala Harris thinks that its greatest days are still to come. Trump takes away people’s liberties; Harris has spent her whole professional life fighting for liberty. Harris will steer America toward a better future, but a second Trump administration will be more radical and perilous than the first.
The Democratic National Committee states that this four-fold contrast will serve as the main topic of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, which begins on Monday night local time. The convention will be centered around the bigger theme of “For the people, for the future.”
According to a party announcement that outlined the themes of the four convention days, Monday night’s topic would be the Joe Biden presidency and its benefits to the public. As the party gathers to commemorate Biden’s stint in government and express gratitude for his choice, Biden—who regrettably withdrew from the campaign in response to intense pressure from the party—will be the keynote speaker on the opening day of the convention.
The delegates will hear speeches from Biden, his wife Jill, and former Secretary of State and 2016 presidential contender Hillary Clinton. Tony Goodwin, an actor who portrayed the president in the television series Scandal, will emcee the event, according to a CNN story. Additionally, three women who have suffered since the Supreme Court struck down the country’s abortion rights will share their experiences throughout the evening.
Barack and Michelle Obama, who were formerly residents of Chicago, will be the featured speakers on Tuesday under the theme “A Bold Vision for America’s Future.” The party announcement stated, “The Harris-Walz ticket presents a brighter vision where everyone will have a chance not just to get by, but to get ahead. Standing in stark contrast to the Trump-Vance Project 2025 agenda designed to take us backward.”
The conservative think group Heritage Foundation created Project 2025, which was initially intended to serve as a guide for the upcoming Trump administration. However, its extreme Right-wing proposals—which include expanding presidential powers, completely abolishing federal bureaucracy, and taking the abortion medication mifepristone off the market—have alienated swing voters, forcing Trump to distance himself from the initiative and even toss it out. Democrats have persisted in claiming that Project 2025 is the true plan, pointing out that its writers have collaborated with Trump and that he has frequently praised the leadership of the Heritage Foundation, and asserting that it pledges a nationwide abortion ban.
The topic on Wednesday is “A fight for our freedoms,” which puts front and center the characterization of what’s at stake in this election that has come to be central to the Harris campaign. “Vice President Harris has spent her entire career fighting for Americans’ freedoms,” the party announcement reads. Vice President Harris selected Governor Tim Walz as her campaign partner who is a strong supporter of the same basic liberties and a fighter for America’s working families. During his four years in government, Donald Trump fought to restrict our rights, and now he is running on an extreme platform to further roll back all the liberties we value.
On Wednesday, Walz—a former congressman, a governor of Minnesota, an army veteran, a former football coach, and a school teacher—will make his national debut on the largest platform of his career. Because Walz is running against Republican opponent JD Vance, whose prior remarks have alienated swing voters, especially women, the Harris team seems to be hoping that Walz’s friendly and cheery demeanor, midwestern background, and progressive record in the state would inspire voters. Bill Clinton, a former US president, is scheduled to speak on the last night of the conference. The event will be hosted by actor and director Mindy Kaling, who is of Indian descent. Her video, which became popular before the 2020 elections, showed her preparing a dosa with Harris.
The last night is Thursday when Harris will accept the nomination and give the American people a definition of her campaign and the contest. The party claims that a second Trump term “would be even more dangerous and more extreme than the first one,” and the evening’s theme is “For our future.” The actor Kerry Washington will host the event this evening.
When asked about her speech on a Pennsylvania campaign trip, Harris said that it was about finished and that she would be making final adjustments over the next few days. The speech will center on the idea of the “promise of America” and how everyone was in this together. Harris also asserted that the Democrats remained the underdogs in the election, even despite an uptick in the polls and a more upbeat mood inside the party. “We are the underdog in my opinion. To win the American people’s support, we still have a lot of work ahead of us. This is the reason we are on this bus tour today, and we will continue to traverse the nation as we have been, interacting with people, listening to them, and perhaps winning their support in the process over the next 79 days.”
The way Harris shares her narrative with the American people and the policies she proposes will both be closely observed throughout her address. In a speech on Friday in North Carolina, Harris offered an early look at her economic program, emphasizing the “care economy,” which includes the child tax credit and affordable housing, which includes first-time homebuyer assistance. However, she has been reticent to provide further information on matters like border security, energy and environmental policy, and foreign policy—all of which are major targets of the Republican Party’s attacks.
As the new contender prepares for the most significant week of her political career, how Harris strikes a balance between taking credit for the achievements of the Biden administration and keeping some distance from its less popular legacies, such as Israel’s war in Gaza, which will attract protesters in Chicago, will also be a test for her.
