“Bigotry. The Indian guy engaged in the ‘10% tip in US’ dispute stated, “I thought it only existed in their movies and TV shows,” lamenting the vitriol he had encountered.
After sharing a post criticizing the US tipping culture, YouTuber Ishan Sharma became embroiled in a dispute. He shared on social media how a waiter declined to return his $5 in change from his $45.00 payment. The waiter allegedly indicated it was for a tip when someone asked and then left. His post caused social media users to become polarized. Some praised him, but others were critical of him. The YouTuber has since talked about how the hostility he experienced has affected him.
As a result of expressing my viewpoint and posing a query: I received abusive DMs from hundreds of Americans and Indian Americans. Bigotry. I had assumed that it was limited to their TV series and films. Up to now… Just for posing a query? Amazing!” he penned. Additionally, he posted screen grabs of comments in which others called him names, cursed at him, and urged him to return.
The result of sharing my opinion and asking a question:

Hundreds of Americans and Indian Americans DMing me the most hateful messages.
Racism.
I thought it only existed in their movies and TV shows.
Until today…
All for asking a question?

The post has received over 1.3 million views, and the amount is growing. X users’ opinions were sharply divided in response to this post. There were those who agreed with him and those who didn’t.
How did X users react to this share?
“People found it difficult to understand the valid argument you brought up. I’m sure they feel the same way about leaving tips, yet being stylish on social media at other people’s cost seems to fit their pointless life, an X user wrote.
Another said, “I disagree with nearly all of your tweets, but I still stand by you on this.” A third said, “It’s sad tbh! It’s sad that they’re too arrogant that an Indian questioned their broken system,” and you are receiving abuse for that. They refuse to acknowledge that the system is flawed and that servers should get more compensation. but will make you feel bad for enquiring.
“Damn man,” wrote a fourth. Believe me, none of these people can even afford to have a decent lunch, much less leave a 15-20% gratuity. Disregard them. Regarding tipping culture in the United States, you were correct. It almost seems like extortion.
