Karan Johar spoke about how he had witnessed his father’s setbacks as a producer and how he had previously been treated disrespectfully at an awards ceremony.
During his participation on the first episode of comedian Zakir Khan’s new program, Aapka Apna Zakir, Karan Johar discussed his late father, Yash Johar. Karan spoke on how he seen his father struggle as a producer and how the business treated him with disdain.
What Karan said
When Karan was questioned on the show if he was aware of the previous box office results of his films, the producer responded in Hindi, saying, “I never felt as if I have killed it or that my film will be a huge box office success.” Because I am a producer’s kid at heart, I fear that I will lose money and wind myself on the streets. After working for thirty years as a production controller, my father produced his first movie, Dostana, with the help of a sizable loan, and the movie was a success. He went on to make several additional movies after that, but they were all box-office failures.
“I’m sorry he departed from us so quickly.”
Karan continued by describing a specific instance, saying, “We were invited to premieres but were given really subpar seats.” My father would therefore beg me to go even if he wouldn’t. I could see the anguish in his eyes as he wondered why he had been invited when he was unrespected. A bitter pill to swallow is failure. Your failure is publicly acknowledged when a film fails, and it was painful to watch him go through that. He would have been overjoyed to see Dharma where she is now. I regret that dad left us so quickly, barely getting to see five or six years of my trip. The fact that he wasn’t here at its prime is my greatest sorrow.
At the age of 75, Yash Johar passed away from cancer on June 26, 2004. Yash Johar proceeded to establish Dharma Productions under his own brand in 1976. Karan Johar took over the production company upon his passing. Bad Newz was his most recent release.
