Bollywood luminary Sonu Sood finds himself ensnared in controversy. His recent remarks on the Uttar Pradesh government’s mandate for food vendors along the Kanwar Yatra path to display proprietors’ names have sparked disapproval. Specifically, his tweet about a dhaba owner allegedly spitting on roti during preparation has ignited a firestorm of criticism. In response, the actor has now provided clarification regarding the contentious tweet.
Sonu Sood addressed the issue on X (formerly known as Twitter), stating, “I have never justified those who spit in food. It reflects their unchanging character, and they deserve severe punishment for such actions. However, let’s not lose our humanity, my friend. Instead of debating, we should devote our time to helping those in need! By the way, I must say, I am a huge admirer of the UP government’s work.”
He continued, “Every household in UP and Bihar is like family to me. Regardless of the state, city, or religion, if you need anything, reach out. My number remains the same.”

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, Kangana Ranaut, also criticized actor Sonu Sood regarding the same issue. Sonu had tweeted, “There should be only one nameplate on every shop: ‘HUMANITY.'” His tweet received significant backlash on the platform. Reacting to Sonu’s stance, Kangana said, “Agree, Halal should be replaced with ‘HUMANITY.'”
The controversy began with a video of a boy preparing rotis for customers, which included footage of him spitting on the flour. This video surfaced following an order that restaurant owners on the Kanwar Yatra route in Uttar Pradesh and Haridwar must display their names on their shops. Sonu Sood responded to this mandate.
Later, a user responded to Sonu Sood’s tweet, saying, “The roti with spit should be sent to Sonu Sood so that brotherhood remains intact!” Sonu replied, “Our Shri Ram ji ate the false berries of Shabri, so why can’t I eat it? Violence can be defeated by non-violence, my brother. Humanity should remain intact. Jai Shri Ram.”
For context, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath mandated that food and beverage shops along Kanwar routes display the name and identity of the operator/owner to maintain the sanctity of the pilgrims’ faith.
