Joe Biden was praised by George Clooney, who called for him to drop out of the 2024 presidential race in a shocking July opinion piece. This cleared the path for a new candidacy.
The legendary actor from Hollywood and his spouse, Amal Clooney, arrived at the Venice Film Festival to see the world premiere of their action comedy film, Wolfs.
Clooney referred to Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race as “the most selfless thing that anybody has done since George Washington” during a press conference.
“The act of selflessness by someone who—you know, it’s very difficult to give up power—should be remembered,” he continued.

George Clooney hails Biden for saving democracy
His comments come after he demanded that Joe Biden step down in an opinion article headlined “I Love Joe Biden, But We Need a New Nominee” that was published in the New York Times.
Clooney questioned Biden’s ability to lead the Democratic Party to victory in the piece, pointing up the president’s advanced age and raising questions about his physical and mental health. “The Joe ‘big f—ing deal’ Biden of 2010 was not the Joe Biden I was with at the fund-raiser three weeks ago.” “He wasn’t even the 2020 Joe Biden,” the author wrote.
Clooney claimed at the press conference that Biden “did the most selfless thing that anybody has done since George Washington,” referencing his opinion piece. Biden deserves “applause.”
Biden formally announced his withdrawal from the race on July 21 and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place.
He emphasized that, rather than the intricacies of Biden’s decision, what would live on in history is his bravery in resigning in favor of a “better way forward.”
“President Biden exemplified authentic leadership.” Once again, he’s defending democracy,” he said.
Since he brought attention to the fact that many Democratic officials had misgivings about Biden’s candidacy, Clooney’s opinion piece had sparked an important debate.
Harris was not mentioned by Clooney at the news conference.
The actor said, “I’m just really proud of where we are in the world right now, which a lot of people find surprising, and I think we’re all very excited about the future.”
