Though X has ceased physical operations in Brazil, it has stated that Brazilian consumers would still be able to use its service.
The massive social network firm X, owned by Elon Musk, declared on Saturday that it is closing down its activities in Brazil immediately in response to what it called a “threat” from Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
In a statement, X said that Moraes had issued a secret order threatening to have the company’s Brazilian legal representative arrested if X disobeyed his censoring orders. According to the corporation, this order was issued outside of the confines of due process and without public notification.
The business voiced dissatisfaction over its repeated petitions to the Brazilian Supreme Court, claiming that they have not been heard and that this has left its employees open to legal threats.
Alexandre de Moraes threatened to have our Brazilian legal counsel arrested last night if we disobeyed his censorship demands. “We share here the secret order he followed to expose his actions,” X stated.
Though X has ceased physical operations in Brazil, it has stated that Brazilian consumers would still be able to use its service.
“That we have to make this choice makes us quite sad. The only person who can take responsibility is Alexandre de Moraes. His behavior is unacceptable in a democracy. The statement said, “Brazil’s people must decide between democracy and Alexandre de Moraes.”
While he looks into alleged “digital militias” that are suspected of disseminating hate speech and fake news during the administration of far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro, Moraes ordered X to ban specific accounts earlier this year.
Early this year, after Musk declared he would revive X accounts that the judge had ordered to be blocked, Moraes launched an investigation into the tycoon. The Moraes’ choices about X have been dubbed “unconstitutional” by Musk.
